Mercenary Crossbowmen - Unit Guide (english)

Mercenary Crossbowmen

Overview & gameplay

Light mainstays with the Lord, Officer and Mage and a typically poor profile for the brave people with 1s everywhere except Resolve and Volley. Yes, I know I'm still too attached to 1.5, because W4 and A4 are of course not 1, but 1 per figure :D Essentially, they are shooters with Movement 5, Barrage 3 at 18", and Armor Piercing for 105 points. Although they individually offer little, the Supremacy of the Imperial Officer transforms them from rather average to solid. Vanguard, one of the three best special rules in the game, allows for good positioning and enables Move-Aim-Shoot in the round when the crossbows enter the field. With their 18" range, they often have 2" more than regiments with bows. While they may lose about 50% of their effectiveness, or even their entire purpose without Vanguard, they can still be played with 3-5 stands wide to provide some support fire.

One should not hesitate to throw them into the meat grinder to buy the rest of the army some time. It's fun to send the Crossbowmen into close combat, placing them 1" in front of enemy regiments, or using them as a living shield for expensive units. Thanks to Vanguard, they can even fulfill these tasks for cavalry and are more annoying with 10 shots than one might

Veterans
There is no Officer, therefore no option for the Veterans Upgrade.

Relentless drill
As a ranged combat regiment, the Crossbows benefit little to no from Relentless Drill.

Conclusion: Cheap all-rounders that unlock restricted selections are always good
