Mounted Squires - Unit Guide (english)

Mounted Squires - Unit Guide
According to their background, the squires are as well trained as knights and they only lack the necessary equipment to be equal on the battlefield. Essentially that's true and the joke of the veteran boys doesn't get any older.

Overview & gameplay

Mainstay with the Mounted Noble Lord and restricted with the Noble Lord on foot, the Mounted Squire look like Man at Arms with the typical 4 attacks, 4 wounds and Resolve 2. However, they have Movement 9, but that's exactly what makes them useful. Bringing forward the supply line has become more valuable again with the current scenarios and thanks to a free banner the costs are okay. There is also Opportunist on top, which allows us to repeat all Clash throws on the opponent's flank. Without Fluid Formation this doesn't come into play quite as often, but as always it's better to have it than to need it.
Your main task is to protect your own shock cavalry such as Household Knights or Order of the Crimson Tower, both of which are very vulnerable to move charge actions by other players. Since they are a light regiment, they come a round ahead and, thanks to Move 9 and free banners, can not only keep up with the rest of the cavalry and serve as a living screen, but with Move Charge they can also tie up most of the enemy's shooting regiments and counterattack with move charge and with D2+ shield survive a clash. Don't do this to Bow Chosen or Slingers who can still chant Death. There are too many hits there and Resolve 2 hurts a lot with small regiments. Otherwise, most regiments are busy bothering the squires for two rounds and do not shoot at the important, expensive knights during this time.
If you use the Squire as a living shield and the opponent binds it with Move Charge so that the shock cavalry cannot participate in the game, you should not be ashamed to use the retreat order. With R2 the risk of 3d6 damage + resolve is quite high, but even with the exception of the veteran, hardly a regiment of squires will free themselves.
There is also the option to place them there to hunt object markers, but the individual impact should never be part of the plan when calculating damage, as this simply happens too rarely with Clash 2. Personally, I'm one of the few who likes to play a noble lord as a squire. Since the Noble only has Movement 7, the entire regiment only moves 7", but the Lord brings 3 impacts with Brutal Impact 2 and significantly increases the chance of 2 damage to an objective from Charge Clash. He also gives the regiment Resolve 3 which is usually not enough to justify reducing the movement.

Veterans
Since we already get a free banner, we only have to pay double the cost of the Count Paladin to give the Mounted Squire +1 Clash. This is very often worth it, since a regiment of 3 models with Clash 3 already produces eight hits and an almost certain 13 hits in a flank. The Count Paladin brings us the rule that the Squire always benefit from the Inspire rule and you can spend your second action on a charge or a move, for example. To be honest, this rarely happens and apart from Veterans, in my opinion there is no other reason to buy this officer.

Relentless drills
As cavalry, the Mounted Squire do not benefit from Relentless Drills

Conclusion: Indispensable for pure cavalry lists and a solid selection as a mainstay that can compete well with all regiments in its price range.
